How to choose between a refurbished and new laptop in 2026
The price gap between refurbished and new laptops has never been wider, but neither has the quality of refurb units that flow through warranty-backed sellers like Xetrix.
What ‘refurbished’ really means
A refurbished laptop has been deep-cleaned, fully tested, had its battery health verified, and any failing components replaced. The unit is graded A / B / C based on cosmetic wear.
Specs to prioritise
- CPU generation — an 11th-gen Intel i5 or Ryzen 5 5000-series will feel current for 3-4 more years.
- RAM — aim for 16 GB minimum.
- Storage — NVMe SSDs, never spinning disks.
- Battery — at least 80% of original capacity on refurbs.
When to buy new
If you need long battery life on Apple Silicon, the newest discrete GPU, or want the longest support runway from the manufacturer, buy new.
